…As Tin Can Customs Impounds ₦5.3 Billion Worth of Narcotics
BY FUNMI ALUKO
In a bold demonstration of Nigeria Customs Service fight against transnational crime, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, Customs Area Controller of Tin Can Island Port Command, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to stamping out drug trafficking through the nation’s maritime borders.
At a press briefing held on Friday, 24 October 2025, Onyeka announced the interception of two containers used to conceal illicit drugs within imported vehicles—an operation that uncovered narcotics worth over ₦5.3 billion.
The first container, originating from Montreal, Canada, was intercepted on 4 September 2025 through coordinated intelligence efforts. According to Comptroller Onyeka, a joint physical examination revealed four vehicles hiding 156 packets of Colorado Indica and 1.2 kilograms of Hashish Oil.
This is even as the second container, seized on 24 October, concealed over a ton of Cannabis Indica and eight packages of Crystal Methamphetamine.
Onyeka described the seizures as a “testament to the Command’s resolve to safeguarding Nigeria’s borders,” emphasizing that under his leadership, Tin Can Island Port Command remains “resolute, vigilant, and uncompromising” in enforcing national and international laws.
He issued stern warning to drug traffickers, declaring that their actions threaten public health, national security, and economic stability.
The seized substances were handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution. Commander Daniel Onyishi of the NDLEA commended the Customs Service for its vigilance, noting the handover as a symbol of strong inter-agency collaboration.
Onyeka also praised the professionalism of his officers and the support of the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR. He urged legitimate traders to uphold transparency and compliance in their operations, reinforcing that Tin Can Island will continue to leverage intelligence, technology, and partnerships to protect Nigeria’s maritime gateways.
With this operation, Onyeka has once again positioned himself as a formidable force in Nigeria’s anti-drug campaign—sending a clear message to traffickers: the nation’s borders are not open for crime.
