BY FUNMI ALUKO
The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) has felicitated with Acting DCG Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR dsm fnipr psc(+) for his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Comptroller General of Customs.
While the board says the appointment is well deserved and that Adeniyi has the knowledge, competence, character and drive to lead the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) into a new era of possibilities and efficient service delivery, the board called on the customs new sheriff to partner with the association towards bridging the critical industry gaps created by certain exigencies of the past eight years.
Chairman of the BoT, Alhaji Taiwo Mustapha, in a statement thanked PBAT for his choice of a diligent, practical, trust worthy and thorough bred officer as the new service helmsman, adding that ANLCA will work with the new CGC to actualize the policy thrust of government through responsible engagements, mutual respect and improved customs trade compliance.
The statement reads: “We received with utmost joy news of the appointment of Ag DCG Wale Adeniyi by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the new Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service.
“We know his track record for diligence, service efficiency, transparency, dedication to duty and sound judgment, and also know that he is eminently qualified to fill his new position. We are thankful to PBAT for finding Adeniyi worthy for his new responsibility, and we congratulate him for his good luck.
“We look forwards to working amicably with him to deliver on the fiscal and monetary policies of this government in terms of trade facilitation, operational innovations and new tools of trade, including anti-smuggling activities and revenue generation.
“We are not unaware that his officers and men are in need of improved welfare and better work condition especially for those operating at out stations. We also trust that the customs service under Adeniyi’s watch will take a second look at the import prohibition regime by way of retooling speedy recovery of our national economy.
“As critical stakeholders, we hope that ANLCA and its members will be carried along in both policy formulation and implementation, and the need to revive the mutually beneficial synergy of yester years, between customs and agents. We believe that this will lead to increased economic growth and the improved GDP, and the narrowing of trade deficits through poor policy planning, administration and execution which we believe are devoid of purposeful engagements.
“Our relationship is like that of husband and wife, we must make allowances to nurture one another. Customs and agents relationship has suffered in the past eight years, we want to be able to close the gap and to redeem lost mutual fidelity, with you at the helms of affairs.”
The BoT Chairman stated further that “ANLCA and its members look forward to amicable working relationship that will engender trust and compliance and also bring the customs service to its desired enviable position.
“We trust implicitly in your capability and capacity to deliver and we are anxious to be part of your success story and indeed the success story of PBAT government.”
