Onne Customs Command Espouses New Era As Alkali Takes Control

In a momentous ceremony held on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Port Harcourt II Area Command otherwise known as Onne Command marked a significant leadership transition as Comptroller Aliyu M Alkali officially assumed duty as the 26th Customs Area Controller.

The baton was passed from Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs (ACG) Mohammed Babandede, recently elevated to his new rank, in a handover event that drew dignitaries and stakeholders from across the maritime and regulatory landscape.

The Command Public Relations Officer, CSC Theophilus Peter Duniya in a release said the event held at the Command’s headquarters in Onne, was graced by the Zonal Coordinator of Zone C, ACG Kamal Mohammed mni, Comptroller Salamatu Atuluku of Port Harcourt I Command, and representatives from security agencies, terminal operators, and freight forwarding associations. The atmosphere was one of warmth, respect, and optimism for the future.

In his farewell address, ACG Babandede expressed deep gratitude to the officers of the Command, sister agencies, and port stakeholders for their unwavering support during his tenure. He highlighted the collaborative spirit that led to notable achievements and urged continued synergy under the new leadership.

ACG Kamal Mohammed praised Babandede’s tenure as one defined by “dedication, vision, and resilience,” noting the indelible legacy he leaves behind. Turning to the incoming Controller, he offered words of encouragement and confidence: “Build on the solid legacies left behind by your predecessor, while bringing in fresh ideas and innovations that will further advance the mission of the Service.”

Comptroller Alkali, in his acceptance remarks, pledged to uphold the trust placed in him by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR. He outlined his priorities which includes ensuring compliance with trade regulations, facilitating legitimate commerce, boosting revenue generation, and safeguarding national interests.

This is even as he called on all stakeholders to join hands in driving Nigeria’s economic development forward. With a blend of continuity and fresh leadership, the Port Harcourt II Area Command now embarks on a new chapter, one poised for growth, discipline, and excellence.
