FMOT Directors Participates In MAN Mgmt Capacity Development Workshop
A total of fifteen (15) directors from the federal ministry of transportation (FMOF) have joined their counterparts and other middle level management staff of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) Oron for a 4-days capacity development workshop organised by the latter.
Declaring the workshop opened, MAN Rector, Commodore Duja Effedua, (Rtd) said that the training is aimed at addressing the urgent need for corporate management performance in MAN, noting that government is desirous of also addressing such identified gaps in the civil service.
Effedua who was represented by the Academy Director Specialized Seafarers Training, Dr. Kelvin Okona said that
for the civil service to continue to make significant progress in it’s overall corporate missions and objectives, deliberate efforts must be made to build the right competences to drive corporate management performances.
He noted that the era of analogue approach to achieving performance excellence is no longer sustainable under a highly competitive and productive civil service environment.
The Rector who was represented by the Director Specialized Seafarers Training, Dr. Kelvin Okona said,
“Permit me to say that the purpose for this workshop is not merely to tease our intellectual faculty, what we expect is to use this opportunity to close a knowledge gap, as a kind of work-to-rule culture that will make our civil service or corporate missions and objectives intelligible to the management cadre.
“To remain competitive and to achive our core mandates and objectives, primitive and analogue processes can no longer be part of us.
“This training is therefore designed to provide us with the required tools and rudiments to outline and pursue our organizational goals, and it is my hope that participants will learn the drill and transfer same to management core objectives.
“l have been made to understand that this new model of performance planning taken by the management would soon be adopted nationwide . We have the responsibility on behalf of the institution to fully make use of the workshop and to understand how we are going to key into this national programme.”
The workshop titled ‘Cascading Performance Management’ was facilitated by Meesrs Usen Udoh and Seun Babalola of VALUEBRIDGE Consulting; veteran and high heeled Human Resources and Organizational Development experts, respectively.
Both gentlemen took turn to take participants through an easy-to-assimilate, explanatory class work and interactive engagement, starting with the introduction of Performance Management System, PMS that encapsulates a whole gamut of work schedule for the four days training which includes the following:
PMS and underlying Theories; Performance Planning and Goal Setting; Cascading Performance Targets; Understanding Performance Indicators; Performance Monitoring and Review; Coaching for Performance Excellence; and Assessing and Improving Corporate Performance.
The workshop which started yesterday at the Academy’s state-of-the-art Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi’s Auditorium Wednesday is scheduled to wind down on Saturday.
Okona urged participants who are either visiting the Academy for the first time or haven’t been around for more than two years to take time out to go around and enjoy the splendour and hospitality that has since 2017 become the identity of MAN under an uncommon administrator and manager per excellence.
“I invite and urge those who are visitors to this institutions to take out time to go around the Academy to see the repositioning and restructuring of the institution which started in 2017 has achieved for this nation.
“It was under the leadership of Commodore Duja Effedua Rtd. that the institution has been changed to become this good and we are only happy that this kind of workshop is going to compliment what we have achieved in the institution so that we then start contributing, distribute to the whole of the performance of the academy in the institution.
“Welcome maritime academy of Nigeria. Take time to take a tour of the academy.”
