‘NSLM-MAN Partnership a Redefining Trajectory for Nigeria’s Maritime Training’ – Kehinde
BY EGUONO ODJEGBA
The Chairman of the Governing Council of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Engr. (Chief) Kehinde Akinola FNICE, FCIOD, MNIM, has described the commencement of the long-sea training programme facilitated by Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) as a redefining trajectory in the nation’s maritime education and capacity development.
Speaking at the launch ceremony in Port Harcourt, Akinola emphasized that the initiative represents more than a routine academic milestone. He noted that it signals a transformative shift from theory to practice, and from aspiration to actualization for cadets of the Academy.
“This programme is a redefining trajectory for our maritime sector. It bridges the gap between classroom instruction and professional competence, ensuring that our cadets emerge not just as graduates, but as globally competitive officers and engineers,” he said.

Represented by the Council Member, Hon. Faisal Lawal Halidu, Akinola commended NLNG for its steadfast commitment to maritime capacity building, describing the company’s provision of berths for sea-time training as a demonstration of corporate patriotism and strategic investment in Nigeria’s blue economy. He stressed that without sea-time, certification remains incomplete, and without industry partnership, training remains theoretical.
The Governing Council Chairman charged cadets to embrace the challenges of sea-time training, reminding them that safety, professionalism, integrity, and teamwork are non-negotiable values in the global maritime industry. He assured stakeholders that the Council remains committed to reforms, infrastructure upgrades, and partnerships that will position the Academy as a centre of excellence in Africa.
“Our cadets are ambassadors of this Academy and of Nigeria. As they sail across oceans, they carry the aspirations of a maritime nation determined to take its rightful place in global shipping,” Akinola declared.
The event brought together representatives of NLNG, the Academy’s management, industry leaders, instructors, and proud parents, all united in celebrating what Akinola described as a turning point in Nigeria’s maritime education journey.
