The immediate past governor of Delta State, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has declared his intention to contest the Delta North Senatorial seat under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. His announcement which purportedly followed a delegation of political leaders urging him to run, citing his “experience” and “consensus-building” abilities has thrown the state into a mourning mood.

Yet, this declaration comes against the backdrop of ongoing investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) into alleged misappropriation of state funds during his tenure. For many Deltans, the move is not only shocking but also a stark reminder of the controversies that defined his years in office.

The Allegations of Squandermania

Concerned persons argue that Okowa’s governorship was marred by reckless financial mismanagement and diversion of public funds. Key points often raised include:

State Treasury Drain: Allegations that billions were siphoned through questionable projects and political patronage; some of which charges are undergoing court trials.

Atiku Presidential Bid Funding: Claims that Delta’s resources were funneled into the 2023 presidential campaign where Okowa served as running mate remains another disturbing sphere in which the commonwealth of Deltans were traded for his jaded and failed vice presidential bid.

Unfinished Projects: The alleged Okowa mindless financial heist includes numerous infrastructural initiatives reportedly abandoned or poorly executed despite heavy budgetary allocations.

Opaque Governance: All of above are part of large scale accusations of lack of transparency in fiscal management, leaving the state burdened with debt and underdevelopment.

Political Intrigues

Observers note that Okowa’s defection to APC and his senatorial ambition may be part of a broader national strategy under President Bola Tinubu to consolidate political influence in Delta State. The alleged go-slow and stalling of EFCC’s prosecution further fuels suspicion of elite protectionism at the expense of accountability. It would amount to double jeopardy for Deltans if Okowa finds himself at the senate through the scheming and devices of the APC under President Tinubu on whose behalf, the state lost its PDP overall status before the conniving and treacherous manipulations that toppled the PDP structure in the state.

Why Deltans Are Alarmed

For many citizens, Okowa’s bid represents a potential recycling of failed leadership. Allowing him back into the corridors of power would among others undermine anti-corruption efforts, signal that political impunity trumps justice; and further disrespect the sacrifices of ordinary Deltans who endured economic hardship during his administration.

In conclusion it must be stated loudly, that Okowa’s Senate ambition is not just a political contest but a litmus test for Delta’s collective resolve against corruption and misrule. To permit his candidacy without accountability would be, in the words of critics, “a slap on the integrity and political sagacity of Deltans.”
