In a landmark development for Nigeria’s maritime and logistics sectors, the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron, signed two separate Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Abuja Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control for West and Central Africa and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Nigeria.
The two agreements which were formalized last Tuesday in Oron, Akwa Ibom State, in two distinct sessions was attended by key stakeholders, including the federal ministry of marine and blue economy.

While Barrister Mfon Usoro, President of CILT Nigeria, signed on behalf of the Institute, Captain Sunday Umoren, Secretary General of the Abuja MoU, represented his organization. Dr. Kevin Okonna, Acting Rector of MAN, signed on behalf of the Academy, with Engr. Kehinde Akinola, Chairman of the Academy’s Governing Council, present to witness the occasion.
The MoU with CILT Nigeria is designed to promote student membership and professional development among cadets in the maritime transport department. Under the new arrangement, students will be required to join CILT Nigeria, gaining access to mentorship, networking, and career-building opportunities through the Institute’s Next Generation initiative. This youth-focused arm of CILT has been active in organizing skill development programs, talent hunts, and awards that recognize excellence in logistics and transport.
Meanwhile, the Abuja MoU’s agreement with MAN focuses on the creation of specialized courses for ship inspection officers. These courses aim to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity in Port State Control, ensuring compliance with international maritime safety and environmental standards.
Dr. Okonna emphasized that the Academy is committed to aligning its cadets with relevant professional bodies, including those in nautical science and marine engineering, to enhance their career prospects and industry readiness.
Barrister Usoro praised the initiative, describing it as a forward-thinking partnership that brings students closer to the industry they aspire to join. She noted that the collaboration aligns with CILT’s mission to nurture the next generation of transport professionals in Nigeria.

These partnerships mark a significant step in bridging the gap between academic training and industry practice. By embedding professional development into the core of maritime education, the Academy is positioning its students for global competitiveness.
The Abuja MoU’s technical training will bolster Nigeria’s maritime safety regime, while CILT’s mentorship and networking platforms will empower young professionals to lead in logistics and transport. Together, these agreements reflect a shared commitment to excellence, innovation, and sustainable growth in Nigeria’s blue economy.
