Shulamite ‘Foyeku Wins TransQuest Media Excellence Award
BY FUNMI ALUKO
The TransQuest 20 Years of Media Excellence Seminar/Awards, held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja, was not only a platform for robust dialogue on Nigeria’s maritime future but also a celebration of excellence in journalism and industry contributions.
The awards segment underscored the critical role of the media in shaping maritime discourse and driving accountability in the sector. Among the honorees was Shulamite ‘Foyeku, a distinguished maritime journalist whose work has consistently illuminated the challenges and opportunities within the nation’s maritime and blue economy.
‘Foyeku was recognised for her outstanding reportage, analytical depth, and commitment to industry advocacy, which have positioned her as a trusted voice in maritime journalism. Her award was a highlight of the evening, symbolising the importance of media in bridging the gap between policymakers, industry stakeholders, and the public.

Other recognitions at the event include industry veterans and experts who have contributed to policy development and technical interventions in the maritime sector. Stakeholder organisations acknowledged for their role in advancing dialogue and pushing reforms in port operations, shipping regulation, and blue economy development.
This is even as TransQuest itself was commended for two decades of consistent engagement, and of providing a robust platform for maritime sector discussions and thought leadership.
The recognitions reinforced the message that media excellence and stakeholder collaboration are indispensable to Nigeria’s maritime transformation. By spotlighting journalists like Shulamite Foyeku, the awards underscored the power of informed reporting in driving reforms. These reforms include, regulatory overhaul of Nigerian ports, review of the Cabotage Act to empower indigenous shipowners, development of a world-class transshipment hub, and acceleration of blue economy initiatives including fisheries, aquaculture, and maritime tourism.
The awards ceremony wrapped the seminar on a celebratory note, reminding participants that while technical reforms are critical, storytelling and advocacy through journalism remain central to sustaining momentum.
Thus, Shulamite Foyeku’s recognition stands as a testament to the enduring impact of media voices in repositioning Nigeria as a maritime hub in West and Central Africa.
