BY FUNMI ALUKO
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, was alive with colour and emotion on Monday, June 29, 2026, as the Comptroller General of Customs, BashirAdewaleAdeniyi MFR PhD, returned from Brussels to a rousing reception.
Officers and men of the Service staged a vibrant parade, reflecting both admiration and unity, in celebration of his renewed international mandate and extended tenure at home.
Adeniyi’s career has been marked by transformative leadership within the NCS. Since assuming office, he has spearheaded reforms aimed at modernizing customs operations, strengthening border security, and enhancing revenue collection. His tenure has also emphasized transparency, digitalization, and capacity building, positioning the Service as a key player in Nigeria’s economic development.
His stewardship at the global stage has been equally remarkable. As Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation Council, Adeniyi has championed collaborative frameworks for trade facilitation, promoted customs modernization across member states, and advanced strategies to combat illicit trade. The renewal of his chairmanship underscores international confidence in his vision and ability to drive consensus among diverse customs administrations.
The WCO Council’s decision to extend Adeniyi’s tenure carries significant implications. It ensures continuity in global customs leadership at a time when international trade faces challenges from supply chain disruptions, evolving security threats, and the need for harmonized digital systems. Under Adeniyi’s guidance, the Council has prioritized:
Trade facilitation: Streamlining procedures to reduce delays and costs for businesses.
Capacity building: Supporting member states with training and technical assistance.
Customs digitalization: Advancing the adoption of technology for efficiency and transparency.
Global cooperation: Strengthening partnerships to combat smuggling, terrorism financing, and counterfeit goods.
These initiatives not only benefit Nigeria but also reinforce its role as a leader in shaping international customs standards.
With his tenure as Comptroller General extended by President Bola Tinubu, Adeniyi is expected to deepen reforms within the NCS. His agenda includes:
Automation of processes: Expanding digital platforms to reduce human interference and curb corruption.
Trade facilitation corridors: Creating smoother pathways for importers and exporters.
Border security enhancement: Deploying advanced surveillance and intelligence systems.
Capacity development: Investing in training and welfare of officers to boost professionalism.
Revenue optimization: Strengthening compliance and plugging leakages to maximize national income.
These reforms are expected to align Nigeria’s customs operations with global best practices, while also supporting the country’s economic diversification and competitiveness.
Adeniyi’s dual mandate, leading both the NCS and the WCO Council, cements his reputation as a reformer and consensus-builder. His return to Abuja was not just a homecoming, but a celebration of leadership milestones that continue to shape the future of customs administration locally and globally.
