Comptroller Kaila

BY EGUONO ODJEGBAAt the bustling Seme Border, Nigeria’s busiest and most diplomatically sensitive gateway, Comptroller Abdullahi L. Kaila has begun to etch his mark as a tactician and bridge-builder.

Known within the Nigeria Customs Service circles as a hardboiled enforcement operative, Kaila’s career has been forged in the crucible of anti-smuggling operations across Nigeria’s borderlands. His mastery of jungle tactics and cross-border enforcement has earned him a reputation as one of the Service’s most seasoned operatives. Now, at Seme, he is deploying not just force, but diplomacy.

By all definition, Seme is more than just a command; it is the Lagos-Abidjan Corridor, a lifeline of commerce, culture, and diplomacy. Yet, trade barriers and smuggling have long plagued its potential. Comptroller Kaila, upon assuming command, declared his mission: to eradicate hindrances to free movement of goods and services, aligning with the Federal Government’s economic vision of regional integration.

Thus, from the word go, his strategy has been clear: collaboration. In a recent tour, he visited traditional rulers, heads of sister security agencies, and even counterparts across the Benin Republic, seeking to weave a web of trust and cooperation.

At the Palace of Oba Akran of Badagry Kingdom, Kaila paid respects to the late HRM De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I, a revered figure across border communities. He emphasized the Customs’ reliance on traditional institutions:

“Without due support and co-operation from traditional rulers, we cannot have effective performance of our functions,” he said.

The King Regent, Chief Abel Ogunbiyi, responded warmly, describing Kaila as “a son of the soil” and pledging Badagry’s continued collaboration in safeguarding borders and promoting legitimate trade.

Similar assurances echoed from Oba Israel Okoya of Ibereko Awori Kingdom and HRM Oba Oyekan Ajose Ilufemiloye of Apa Kingdom, both commending Kaila’s professionalism and promising community support.

Their words underscored a vital truth: that border peace is sustained not only by enforcement but by the elders’ influence over the youths.

Kaila’s tour extended beyond palaces. At the 653 Nigerian Air Force Base in Badagry, Group Captain Hungruy Medugu reaffirmed the shared mission of Customs and Air Force:

“Our collaboration has been key to various successes. Your presence strengthens existing bonds of inter-agency collaboration,” he noted.

The tour culminated with a visit to the Republic of Benin Police office, signaling Kaila’s intent to foster bilateral cooperation in dismantling trade barriers and enhancing cross-border flow. Comptroller Kaila’s approach blends enforcement with diplomacy, tradition with modernity, and local trust with international collaboration. His vision is to transform Seme into not just a border post, but a thriving economic and diplomatic hub.

For a man who has spent his career in the trenches of anti-smuggling warfare, this new chapter reveals another side: the strategist who knows that true border management is as much about people as it is about patrols.
