African Marine Environment Sustainability Initiative (AFMESI) proudly joins the continent on July 25, 2025, to mark the African Day of Seas and Oceans, a moment to reflect on the indispensable role our oceans play in Africa’s sustainability, prosperity, and climate resilience.

From nourishment and energy to commerce and culture, Africa’s marine and coastal environments are lifelines for millions. But they face mounting threats: pollution, over exploitation, climate change, and weak governance. AFMESI continues to lead the charge in advancing a sustainable blue economy, championing inclusive policies and innovative partnerships that safeguard our waters for generations to come.

This year’s theme calls on us all, governments, industries, civil society, and individuals, to act as guardians of our blue future. The call to action is clear:

  • Invest in ocean science and technology
  • Empower and uplift coastal communities
  • Rehabilitate vital ecosystems like coral reefs and mangroves
  • Ensure equitable access to marine resources across the continent

From the vibrant deltas of West Africa to the waves of the Indian Ocean, AFMESI is dedicated to:

  • Driving marine conservation and urgent climate action
  • Elevating women and youth in blue economy sectors
  • Strengthening legal and institutional frameworks
  • Collaborating with African governments on the AU Blue Economy Strategy

Africa’s destiny is intertwined with its waters. Together, let’s safeguard our blue legacy.
