The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone C of the Nigeria Customs Service has once again demonstrated its unwavering resolve in the fight against smuggling and illicit trade. Comptroller BA Balogun, who has consistently showcased measurable successes since assuming duty, today handed over prohibited and highly controlled drugs valued at more than ₦2.6 billion to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Owerri.

The consignments, intercepted through credible intelligence, diligent surveillance, and the professionalism of officers under Balogun’s command, include:

  • 1,126,060 tablets of Tramadol
  • 21,245 bottles of Codeine syrup
  • 666 sacks of Cannabis Sativa (Indian hemp)
  • 19 wraps of Cannabis Sativa
  • 3 wraps of Scottish loud
  • 11 wraps of Ghanaian loud
  • 5 wraps of Colos
  • Other assorted illicit substances

The Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the seizures stands at ₦2,638,102,565.00.

Comptroller Balogun stressed that the misuse and illegal distribution of Tramadol, Codeine-based syrups, and Cannabis Sativa pose grave threats to public health and national security.

This is even as he noted that these substances fuel addiction, high-profile criminal activities, and social instability, particularly among the youth.

“The implications of drug abuse are far-reaching. As a service, we recognise the dangers and remain fully committed to combating this menace at all levels,” Balogun declared.

He highlighted that the breakthrough aligns with the CGC’s policy thrust of Consolidation, Collaboration, and Innovation, emphasizing that teamwork and inter-agency synergy remain central to their enforcement strategy.

Balogun commended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for its critical role as the lead agency in drug control and enforcement, ensuring that seized items are kept out of unregulated circulation.

He described the handover as more than a routine exercise, but rather a demonstration of shared resolve to rid society of harmful substances.p

The Comptroller lauded the vigilance, dedication, and integrity of his officers and men, attributing the success of the operation to their professionalism. He also appreciated the continued cooperation of the NDLEA and other critical stakeholders in the collective effort to secure the nation.

He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and support law enforcement agencies by providing timely and useful information.

“Together, we can build a safer and healthier society,” he affirmed.

In conclusion, Comptroller Balogun formally handed over the seized consignments to the NDLEA for further investigative and administrative actions in line with their operational mandate.

The exercise sends a clear message to drug traffickers and smugglers that their activities will not go unchecked, reinforcing the Customs Service’s zero-tolerance stance on smuggling.
