Oyetola’s Strategic Investment Moves Reaches Copenhagen

In a bold bid to position Nigeria as the premier maritime hub of West and Central Africa, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, has taken Nigeria’s investment campaign to the Scandinavia, pitching lucrative opportunities to top Danish officials and maritime industry leaders.

Leading a high-level official delegation to Copenhagen, Oyetola engaged in strategic bilateral discussions aimed at unlocking Danish capital, green shipping technologies, and infrastructure expertise to accelerate Nigeria’s blue economy transformation.

At the centerpiece of the visit was a high-stakes meeting with Denmark’s Minister for Business and Competitiveness, Martin Lidegaard. The talks centered on turning diplomatic goodwill into bankable maritime projects, spanning port modernization, shipbuilding, digital technologies, sustainable fisheries, and renewable ocean energy.

Shift to Project Execution: Nigeria has transitioned from setting up institutional frameworks to active project development, investment mobilization, and sector capacity building.

Leveraging Existing Footprints: Oyetola highlighted the long-standing success of Danish companies already operating in Nigeria as a proven blueprint for new investors.

Targeting High-Growth Sectors: Priority investment areas include port infrastructure, ship repair, digital maritime logistics, green shipping transitions, and multimodal transport connectivity.

Access to Regional Scale: Investors were urged to leverage Nigeria’s vast coastline, massive consumer market, and strategic position within West and Central Africa for long-term commercial returns.

Aligning Danish Expertise with African Scale

During the engagements, Oyetola underscored that Nigeria is actively seeking strategic partners capable of delivering capital, innovation, and technical skill transfers.

“Nigeria is looking for partnerships that can improve sector performance, attract investment, deploy technology, strengthen skills and safety, advance sustainability, and create quality jobs. The presence of some Danish companies in Nigeria provides a strong foundation on which we can build”, Oyetola said.

Denmark, globally recognized for its leadership in shipping logistics, maritime safety, and green technologies, views the collaboration as a gateway to pair its technical strength with the sheer scale of Africa’s largest economy.

Responding to the pitch, Martin Lidegaard welcomed closer ties, emphasizing that successful outcomes will rely on practical, commercially sustainable partnerships involving government agencies, private enterprises, and research institutions from both nations.

High-Powered Delegation Supporting the Push

The strength of the Nigerian delegation reflected the administration’s institutional commitment to securing foreign direct investment across the maritime value chain.

Those in the minister’s delegation include Mrs. Fatima Mahmood, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy; Prof. Busayo Fakinlede, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Marine & Blue Economy; Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA); Dr. Pius Akutah, Director-General, Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency (NPERA); and Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

The Copenhagen visit marks a decisive step in Nigeria’s strategy to modernize its ports, enhance maritime security, and build a sustainable ocean economy driven by private-sector capital.
