…Intercepts Live Pangolins in Early Operational Breakthrough

FUNMI ALUKO

Barely days after assuming leadership of the Ogun I Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Deputy Comptroller Abdulhamid Ibrahim has put his right foot forward by demonstrating strong operational grit, administrative efficiency, and a commitment to strategic partnerships.

In a major early anti-smuggling breakthrough along the Abeokuta Waterside corridor in Ogun State, officers under his command intercepted three live pangolins, signaling an uncompromising stance against illicit cross-border trade and wildlife trafficking.

The successful operation unfolded after a patrol team, acting on actionable intelligence, executed a targeted enforcement sweep along the waterway. Upon sighting approaching Customs officers, the suspected traffickers fled the scene, abandoning the endangered animals, which were found packed in sacks and confined within wire-mesh cages; a stark reminder of the harsh conditions involved in illicit wildlife trafficking.

Reaffirming the Command’s commitment to environmental preservation and international conventions, including the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), Ibrahim immediately forged a collaborative front with conservation experts by formally handing over the rescued pangolins to Green Fingers Wildlife Conservation for medical evaluation, rehabilitation, and ultimate release back into a safe habitat.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, DC Ibrahim underscored that the interception reflects both tactical vigilance and a strategic alignment with Nigeria’s legal framework, particularly the Endangered Species (Control of International Trade and Traffic) Act and the Endangered Species Conservation and Protection Bill, which mandates severe penalties of up to ₦12 million in fines and 10-year prison terms for offenders.

He commended his officers for their quick response and stressed that inter-agency collaboration and intelligence-led operations will remain the cornerstone of his administration’s strategy to protect Nigeria’s biodiversity and secure border corridors.

Receiving the animals, the Administrative Manager and Supervisor for Green Fingers Wildlife Conservation, Mr. Isaac Itue Ime, applauded the Command’s prompt action and professionalism, emphasizing that such swift interventions play a vital role in dismantling trafficking syndicates and giving endangered species a fighting chance at survival.

Closing with a firm warning to criminal elements, the Ogun 1 Custos new sheriff made it clear that Ogun State’s waterways, land borders, and transit points will not serve as safe havens for illicit trade under his watch, cementing his early tenure with proactive leadership, strong stakeholder engagement, and unyielding enforcement.
