BY FUNMI ALUKO
Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency of Nigeria, NIMASA, Dr. Bashir Jamoh, has won Maritime Nigeria Man of the Year 2021 award.
According to a statement by Mr. Kelvin Kagbare, Managing Director CEO of Data Resources Ltd, publishers of Maritime Nigeria, Newsgate and Maritime Insider, the award was confered on Dr. Jamoh in recognition of his commitment and uncommon resilience in expanding the capacity potential of the maritime industry.
Presenting the coveted Award to the NIMASA DG at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua International Conferences Centre, Kagbare, who doubles as Managing Editor of Maritime Nigeria said Dr. Jamoh’s commitment to resolving the myriad of issues affecting development of the industry is unique and unrivaled.
According to the Maritime Nigeria CEO, Dr. Bashir Jamoh emerged Maritime Man of the Year 2021 after a painstaking, industry opinion pool, in addition to a very exhaustive editorial debate, both of which were based on verifiable evidence, statistics and data.
Some of the research samples cover key commitment to seafarers training/certification, dockworkers welfare and their improved condition of service.
His efforts to remove Nigeria from the War Risk Insurance Premium, in addition to providing a huge maritime security platform, are part of the key evidences of his uncommon commitment to capacity development building.
A resourceful and appreciative leader, Dr. Jamoh is also one who understands the politics and diplomacy of global shipping.
In the heat of the war risk insurance premium imposed on Nigeria, he would mount the podium at every opportunity and call for the lifting of the penalty; describing it as unfair.
“It is significant that critical stakeholders in the world shipping community, like Lloyd’s List, are recognizing Nigeria’s efforts to make the Gulf of Guinea safe and secure for seafarers and ships, it would be unfair for the world to sidestep such huge investment and commitment to maritime security and retain the high war risk insurance premium on ships bound for our waters.” Jamoh says.
Maritime Nigeria added that Dr. Jamoh have also contributed positively to the transformation at the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, MAN, as a key denominator to maritime capacity building.
Dr. Jamoh played leading roles in the establishment of the Forum of Maritime CEOs. Visionary, he secured the Flag off of the Wreck Removal Project, including the flag off of the 3rd phase of National Seafarers Development Program, NSDP. He championed staff promotion which has translated into improved service delivery at NIMASA, and has led the way in corporate social investment, which has translated to donation of relief materials to victims of natural disasters across the country.
In his acceptance address, the NIMASA Director General thanked Maritime Nigeria for the recognition and appreciation of his modest efforts, even as he promised to work harder.
“I salute Maritime Nigeria for the recognition and honour and we at NIMASA will continue to strive for the good and development the industry.
“The MARITIME MAN OF THE YEAR AWARD is the ultimate award because the maritime industry is my primary constituency and I dedicate it to the Maritime online media.
“Every day I receive updates as my phone is always beeping with news and updates from Maritime Nigeria and other online mediums. Therefore, the Award is a call to duty and we shall not relent in our efforts to ensure a secured, much more improved Nigerian maritime industry” Dr. Jamoh said.
In a related development the NIMASA Media/Public Relations department has also bagged the Most Articulate, Most Proactive and Most Responsive Maritime Industry Media Award!
Presenting the Award to NIMASA Media Team in Lagos, the Maritime Nigeria crew led by Mr. Kelvin Kagbare said the award is in recognition of the team’s efforts as the most meticulous and conscious team among government parastatals in the industry.
The publisher noted that the unit has been very consistent, responsive, proactive and very articulate in their public relations task.
“There is actually no basis for comparison as every CEO will get the kind of Media Unit he creates. If you look at the NIMASA Media/PR Unit, there has been a tradition of excellence and a consistency flowing from heads of the unit over the years.
“NIMASA Media Team always run with developments, they are responsive to media inquiry, and there’s this touch of professional thoroughness. Nothing makes a reporter happier than a professional, well written release.
“It has been said and rightly so that the reward for a job well done is more work. Emerging as the Best Maritime Media team 2021 is therefore putting the team members on their toes and urging them not to rest on their oars”, Kagbare said.
It could be recalled that Commodore Duja Emmanue Effedua, Rector, Maritime Academy of Nigeria first bagged the Maritime Man of the year 2020 for his undisputed, widely acclaimed efforts in Restructuring and Repositioning the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, MAN, for global recognition.
The Academy has become the bride which maritime stakeholders, NASS members and foreigners alike love to identify with.
A sharp departure from the pariah state in which Effedua met the Academy
